Robotics – An Introduction

The moment we hear the term ‘Robotics’ we usually tend to conjure up different images in our head of most commonly either iron man from the movies or huge machinery in factories. The main purpose of this blog is to understand the basics of Robotics. Being the marketing lead at Systemantics, here is my perspective on Robotics.

A funny fact about robotics is that it doesn’t have a formal definition. To put it in the most simplest terms, it is the complete study and development of robots. Anything that has to do with robots, in terms of it’s design, engineering, electronics and applications all come under the big umbrella of robotics. Our fascination for robots has never ceased since its inception. It has engaged with us in every aspect of our lives be it the big screens or large manufacturing firms.

In reality, it is quite an age old topic going back as far as the 1930’s in contrast to the way most of think of it as a new topic in town. The concept of creating machines that can operate autonomously dates back to the classical times, but research into the functionality and potential use cases only emerged in the 20th century. Ever since, it has only gained momentum and has been in the fore-front of the technology space. A wide range of people from various walks of life under the huge canopy of the science field have dedicated their lives to improving and building knowledge in this field since its inception.

The fundamentals of robotics include mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science. A large chunk of time in robotics is dedicated to R&D since the scope to tap into newer technologies increase by the day. Just being a part of Systemantics for two weeks and with a team that lives and breathes robotics, I have realised the amount of work and careful detail that goes into making quality products for the specific applications and use cases. It is these products that will go into the marketplace to do these tedious processes. Being up-to-date with the new emerging technologies is part and parcel in the robotics space. One of the main core aspects to robotics is looking at cost-effective measures to develop and build a robot to meet the required application.

The application for robotics is never ending. As more robots are designed for specific tasks, there is a large variety of domains robotics can fit in. Some of the current and potential applications are in the medical, military, industrial automation, astronomy, under-water excavation, electric mobility, agriculture, search and rescue, so and so forth. We at Systemantics focus solely on industrial automation and want to change the way automation is done in the manufacturing plant through our design innovations and technology. Further to this, the list of applications is unending and could venture out into spaces unknown currently to us; such is the impact of robotics.

In conclusion, robotics is an ever growing space with fresh ideas and technologies rolling out every season. The scope for further developments is huge and the scope for it is sometimes even unthinkable at this moment. It’s been an amazing insight for myself to see the importance of robotics and the large scope it has to improve the quality of different applications it has influence on. It is cool, hip at the same time intriguing and definitely gonna be part of our everyday life for a long time to come.
